What is a chinchilla?

Above is a picture of a Standard Grey Chinchilla. She was about 6-7 months when this picture was taken but you can see her crisp white belly and her veiling is coming down her sides. She is the most common colour of chinchilla and arguably one of the best colours as this colour is the base coat for all the other chinchilla colours.
